NSPII has annually recognized a person or persons who have made an outstanding contribution to the fight against insurance fraud. Prior to 1993, the award was called the Investigator of the Year Award. Starting in 1993, the award was renamed to honor F. Lee Brininger, who was recently deceased. Mr. Brininger was instrumental in founding NSPII, and served as its first President and from 1985 to 1993 as Executive Secretary. Also, in 1993, the Board of Directors specified their intent that this award go to an
investigator who had "demonstrated skill, dedication, and honesty in fighting insurance fraud."
